Professor Terry Marsden - Co-Director
Career Experience and Qualifications
Terry Marsden is Co-Director of BRASS and Director of the Sustainable Places Institute. He is also Professor of Environmental Policy and Planning in the School of City and Regional Planning He is Dean of the University Graduate College.
Terry was educated at the University of Hull and received his PhD from this institution in 1980. He worked at a variety of Universities prior to joining Cardiff University including University College London, the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Pernambuco, Brazil. He is a member of the Royal Town Planning Institute and Co-editor of the Journal of Environmental Policy and Planning.
Research Areas of Interest
Professor Marsden's research expertise is in theoretical and empirical studies in rural development, agro-food studies, sustainable development and planning, policy development and rural governance.
Research Projects
His current research projects have focussed on developing the field of place-based sustainable development. He is currently researching:
- Continuing sustainable communities project. ESRC and BRASS (2007 - 2012);
- New five-year food programme. BRASS (2007 - 2012);
- Changing pressures in the Chinese Countryside: city demands, small towns and the ‘new countryside movement’. Pilot project China (2007 - 2010);
- Wales Rural Observatory: rural economic development and eco-economy strand (2007 - 2010);
- Delivering Sustainability: Towards the Creative Procurement of School Meals. ESRC (2005 - 2007).
- Welfare Quality. EU (2007 - 2009).
In addition to being the author of more than 150 reports, books and articles on these themes, he has acted as an advisor to the Welsh Assembly Government, Defra, the Prime Minister’s Strategy Unit and ESRC on rural research and policy. He is currently a member of the Strategic Advisory Committee of the ESRC’s Rural Economy and Land Use Research Programme.
