‘Public-Private Regulation: economic globalisation and ecological localisation in the agri-food sector.’

 

Career Experience and Qualifications

Poppy Nicol holds a bachelors degree in Geography from Oxford University. Her dissertation focused upon the impact of a local food project in South Wales. This stimulated an interest in the empowering potential of food within communities. She has since volunteered on an organic farm in Italy and community agricultural projects in California, gaining insight into the concepts of agro-ecology. She is currently a volunteer at a market garden and urban tree nursery.

Before beginning her 1+3 ESRC scholarship she contributed to the ‘Children Make Places’ publication and assisted with the ‘Glasgow 2020: Dreaming City’ launch during an internship at Demos, and co-authored an evaluation of the ‘Food Matters’ educational pilot in a Cardiff college alongside Prof. Kevin Morgan and Dr. Tanja Bastia. She  completed her MSc Social Science Research Methods at Cardiff University prior to commencing her PhD and has also sucessfully undertaken a Documentary Filmmaking Module at UCL.

Current Research

Poppy is currently in her second year at Cardiff University, undertaking a PhD in sustainable urban agri-food systems, with a focus on apples. She is supervised by Prof. Terry Marsden, and the title of her PhD is ‘Public-Private Regulation: economic globalisation and ecological localisation in the agri-food sector.’

Research Interests

Sustainable food networks; fair-trade; public space; socio-politics of horticulture and fruit; sensual methods; photography.

Events

Since starting her PhD, Poppy has facilitated workshops at the ‘Nutopia’ Arcades Project and Union Street Orchard and has participated in Terra Madre 2008, Communiversity 2009 and the AESOP Sustainable Food Planning Conference in the Netherlands, 2009.
