Agriculture is central to sustainable development in relation to the production of food, the impacts on ecosystems and landscapes, and the development of sustainable rural economies and communities. BRASS research has explored issues of future food security, organic production methods and issues of governance and accountability throughout the food supply chain. The creation of more sustainable food systems through local initiatives or the harnessing of public sector purchasing power have been two key themes in this research.
